What is also not as well known is that the HDTV DVR (Digital Video Recorder) also acts like an HDTV receiver. The benefits here is that not only will you be receiving the digital signal and converting it to a visual format, you will also be able to record, pause and playback live television. 

 Rent Or Buy An HDTV Receiver? 

If you are receiving your television service via a cable company you will typically rent the HDTV receiver.  If the newer models come out, typically you can easily get the newer model by simply exchanging it with the cable company. If you are a satellite television customer, you will have to purchase the receiver (typically charged over 3 months) but will be able to keep it if you ever change to another company.
